Having a blog is a great way of investing your time and will eventually pay off in the nearest future if properly done. In our previous post, we talked about creating a blog using self-hosted WordPress blogging platform ( in which you have to spend money on hosting and domain name). This still remains the best way of creating a blog compared to free blogging platforms. However, many newbie think it wiser not to spend money on blogging initially. They would rather go for a free blog.
WordPress.com and BlogSpot.com stands out among all the free blogging platforms out there. But for the purpose of this post, we are interested in BlogSpot by Google. If you want to advance and become more professional in the future, you can decide to convert your blogspot.com blog to self-hosted WordPress.org blog.
NOTE: Every free blogging platform including BlogSpot have limitations.
WHAT IS BLOGSPOT?
BlogSpot is a free blogging platform powered by Google. With BlogSpot, you can create and run a free blog. In other words, BlogSpot is a Google-centric blogging platform. Unlike the self-hosted blogging platforms, you do not pay for hosting with BlogSpot. Also, buying a domain name for your blog is optional.
HOW TO CREATE A FREE BLOG WITH BLOSPOT (step by step guide with images)
STEP ONE: Go to Google.com and create your free email account. Your email account must end with “@gmail.com” (e.g, ***********@gmail.com) But, if you already have an email account with Google (Gmail), you can ignore this.
STEP TWO: Go to BlogSpot.com and login using your Google account (Gmail account). That is, the email address you created in step one.
STEP THREE: In the next page, You will see an option to use your Google Plus profile, or your BlogSpot profile as your identity. We recommend using your Google Plus profile.
STEP FOUR: Once you are logged in, click on “new blog”. This will take you to a new page where you can create your free blog.
STEP FIVE: Naming your blog: The first thing you need to do is add a name and select your domain. Do not use your name as the domain name unless it is a personal blog. We recommend using a generic domain name that is unique.
STEP SIX: After naming your blog, the next thing is to select a blog template (theme). Template or theme determines how your blog will look like. You can change the template or theme anytime. After that, click on “Create Blog”.
CONGRATS! YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY CREATED YOUR FREE BLOG!
CUSTOMIZING YOUR NEW BLOG
Now that you have successfully created your blog, there are few things you need to set on your new blog to make it easier. You are currently on the BlogSpot dashboard. From there, follow the steps below:
STEP ONE: Go to “Settings” and make changes to your new blog.
STEP TWO: Go to “Pages” and create:
- An “About” page describing who you are and what your blog is about.
- A “Contact” page stating your email address or phone number or address for people that wants to reach out to you.
STEP THREE: Go to “Settings” > “Template” and change the template of your blog if you want to.
STEP FOUR: On the same settings page, you can also add a logo to the header of your BlogSpot blog, and add or remove various other features. You can create a free logo here.
STEP FIVE: Go back to your dashboard and click on “Create Post” to write your first blog first.
Once you have about 20 blog posts, you can go to “Settings” > “Earnings” and enable AdSense for your blog. Adsense is another Google entity that will enable you make money from your blog.
